چکیده

This paper is the first one in a series investigating the properties of the S stars belonging to the Henize sample (205 S stars with δ < −25◦ and R < 10.5) in order to derive the respective properties (like galactic distribution and relative frequencies) of intrinsic (i.e. genuine asymptotic giant branch) S stars and extrinsic (i.e. post mass-transfer binary) S stars. High-resolution (R=30 000 to 60 000) spectra covering the range λλ4230–4270 Å have been obtained for 76 S stars, 8 M stars and 2 symbiotic stars. The λ4262 Å and λ4238 Å blends involving a Tc i line were analysed separately and yield consistent conclusions regarding the presence or absence of technetium. Only one ‘transition’ case (Hen 140 = HD 120179, a star where only weak lines of technetium are detectable) is found in our sample. A resolution greater than R = 30 000 is clearly required in order to derive unambiguous conclusions concerning the presence or absence of technetium. The Tc/no Tc dichotomy will be correlated with radial velocity and photometric data in a forthcoming paper.

The Henize sample of S stars III . Uncovering the binary intruders ?

The properties of S stars are investigated thanks to a large observing program devoted to the well-defined Henize sample (205 S stars south of δ = −25◦ and brighter than R = 10.5, covering all galactic latitudes), in order to derive the respective properties of the intrinsic S stars (genuine thermally-pulsing AGB stars) and of the extrinsic S stars (post mass-transfer binaries). The stellar sam...

The Henize sample of S stars IV . New symbiotic stars ⋆

The properties of the few symbiotic stars detected among the 66 binary S stars from the Henize sample are discussed. Two stars (Hen 18 and Hen 121) exhibit both a strong blue-violet continuum and strong Hα emission (FWHM of 70 km s ), whereas Hen 134 and 137 exhibit weak Hα emission. The Hα profiles are typical of non-dusty symbiotic stars belonging to class S-3 as defined by Van Winckel et al....

A Fast Algorithm for Covering Rectangular Orthogonal Polygons with a Minimum Number of r-Stars

Introduction This paper presents an algorithm for covering orthogonal polygons with minimal number of guards. This idea examines the minimum number of guards for orthogonal simple polygons (without holes) for all scenarios and can also find a rectangular area for each guards. We consider the problem of covering orthogonal polygons with a minimum number of r-stars. In each orthogonal polygon P,...

Pulsating red giant and supergiant stars in the Local Group dwarf galaxy Andromeda I

We have conducted an optical long-term monitoring survey of the majority of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group, with the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT), to identify the long period variable (LPV) stars. LPV stars vary on timescales of months to years, and reach the largest amplitudes of their brightness variations at optical wavelengths, due to the changing temperature. They trace stellar populati...
